Lincolnshire is low density and heavily wooded, and most of its housing went up between the seventies and the nineties. That combination produces a fairly consistent job: cedar and cedar-clad elevations, wide overhangs, and trees close enough to the house to change how the wall behaves.
Cedar is the whole conversation. The first question is what is on it now, because it decides what can go on next. Cedar that has only ever carried stain can generally stay stained, which means less preparation and a shorter, lighter cycle. Cedar that already carries paint does not return to stain without stripping, so the practical answer there is to paint again and do the preparation properly. We would rather tell you which of those your house is than quote whichever suits us.
The trees are the second thing, and they are why houses here fail unevenly. Shaded elevations hold moisture, grow mildew underneath the coating rather than on top of it, and collect sap and leaf residue that rinsing leaves behind. Those faces get treated and dried rather than hosed and coated. Expect north and east to want attention before south and west, and expect an honest company to offer you those elevations on their own rather than the whole house.
There is a real trade to make on finish. A semi-transparent stain keeps the grain visible, which is usually the point of a cedar house, and it asks for more frequent, lighter maintenance. An opaque coating lasts longer and hides the wood. Neither is the right answer in general; the wrong answer is being sold one without being told what it costs you later.
Wide overhangs help the walls and concentrate the work in the trim and soffit, which are harder to reach and routinely underquoted. On a wooded lot the access question is also a ground question: equipment crossing soft spring ground leaves marks that last the summer, so the route gets agreed before the first morning.
Inside, the stock is drywall with volume ceilings, two-story entries and open stair halls. Those need proper access equipment, and that is a line on the quote rather than an assumption.
Should cedar be stained or painted?
It depends on what is on it now and what you want in ten years. Cedar that has only ever been stained can usually stay stained, which is less preparation and a shorter cycle between coats. Cedar already carrying paint does not go back to stain without stripping, so the practical choice is usually paint again and do it properly.
